A four-member team of the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare rescued the turtle on Friday
Just a week after a six-feet whale died after it got stranded at Rajodi beach near Vasai, a severely injured Olive Ridley turtle washed ashore at Juhu beach on Friday afternoon. With this, the total number of turtles rescued in the last three weeks from the west coast of Mumbai, reached 16.

On receiving the information, honorary wildlife warden of Thane and head of NGO RAWW, Pawan Sharma, along with his team immediately reached the spot. Speaking to mid-day, Sharma said, "The turtle was rescued by a four-member team of the Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare around 4.30 pm on Friday. It is currently being treated at Dr Rina Dev's clinic in Bandra and will later be shifted to the WCAWA Sea Turtle Rescue Centre at Dahanu, with the help of forest department's Mangrove Cell."
Sources said that the turtle's two flippers were missing and one was badly injured. Rescue team members Sagar Pandhi, Harshit Savla, Mitesh Raimangiya and Pawan Sharma safely carried out the rescue operation.
Fishermen need to be aware
Environmentalist Anand Pendharkar from NGO SPROUTS, said, "As wave action is extremely high in the sea during monsoon, many animals get washed ashore. In case of turtles, it happens mainly because they follow their food source, which also tends to move towards the coast. Fishermen should also be careful and must use the Turtle Exclusion Device (TED) while fishing, so that turtles don't get entangled in the nets and can escape without any injuries."
Meanwhile, in the last three weeks, 14 Olive Ridley turtles and two green sea turtles were found in injured conditions along the west coast between Girgaum Chowpathy and Dahanu.
Experts and members of NGOs working towards conservation of turtles feel that fishermen need to be made aware regarding the matter.
