Mumbai Police received intelligence of a possible aerial attack and declared a no-flying zone for paragliders, drones and micro-light aircraft for a month

While Mumbai has already been on high alert in light of the festive season and the Uri attack, the city has now also been declared a no-flying zone for paragliders, drones and micro-light aircraft to prevent any threat from the skies.

Intelligence received by Mumbai Police states that terrorists or anti-social elements might attack the city using remote-controlled drones or micro-light aircraft or through paragliders. The threat perception is now even higher in light of the surgical strikes, followed by an attack on army camps in Baramullah, Kashmir on Sunday. So, the police have banned usage of such aerial devices from Gandhi Jayanti (October 2) to the end of this month. Any person contravening this order will be punishable under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.
Just a few days ago, mid-day had reported that seven high-end spy drones were seized after they were found to be smuggled in from Canada, costing a total of R1.2 crore. Maharashtra ATS and the city police are already looking into the security angle of the seizure.
Police says
Mumbai Police spokesperson Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma told this reporter, “We always ask people to take permission if they need to use drones. Paragliding and drones have been banned by the police. We are on alert for the festive season and have met the locals to discuss how to ensure safe celebrations.”
