Even as Mumbaikars battle heavy downpour, IMD confirms that situation will remain unchanged for next 48 hours; city's motorists to take biggest hit

The heavy rain that Mumbai has been experiencing during the last 24 hours is likely to stay for two more days. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai has said that intermittent rain shower is likely to occur in the city and suburbs with heavy downpour in some areas. The traffic police are already gearing up for a tough 48 hours, as the ongoing Metro construction work and pothole menace is likely to affect motorists.

As per IMD records, while Santacruz recorded 163.4 mm rainfall, Colaba received 107.2 mm rain. "There's an active offshore draft from North Maharashtra coast to Kerala coast. There are also well-marked low-pressure areas over Bay of Bengal. All these factors are responsible for heavy rain in the city," said Nitha Sasidharan, scientist from IMD. She added a few places in the city would witness heavy rainfall even after 48 hours.

Meanwhile, the heavy downpour caused Powai lake to overflow this morning. Local trains on the Western, Central and Harbour lines were running late by five to 10 minutes. Water logging at Valsad affected long-distance trains playing on that route.

Traffic congestion was reported in Goregaon, Hindmata, Parel, Mulund and Powai. Motorists using the Western Express Highway and the arterial JVLR had to negotiate potholes. "The huge potholes on Santacruz flyover are enough for a biker to skid. The authorities should repair these potholes at the earliest," Versova resident Hitendra Pachkal said.
