In yet another attack on a cop in the city, a traffic police constable was attacked in south Mumbai last evening by a speeding driver, who allegedly punched and abused him and even tore the badge on his uniform. The LT Marg police arrested the driver and two others involved in the matter.

Constable Ganesh Ighe told mid-day, “I was on patrol duty when I got a call from the control room, stating that a few cars were parked near Metro junction. I left for the spot with the towing van to check and had reached near the Metro signal when a car overtook the van and blocked its way. The driver started abusing the driver of the van and was about to beat him up. I intervened, but he pushed me and started abusing. The two others in the car came out and started assaulting the van driver. The car driver then punched me and tore my uniform. I then called the local police, who detained them.”

The trio, identified as Ajaz Shaikh (40), Ashraf Shaikh (24) and Rajesh Rai (21), and Ighe were taken to the LT Marg police station, where Ighe’s statement was recorded.

The police filed an FIR under sections 352 (punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

An officer from the LT Marg police station said, “The traffic policeman registered a complaint in the matter, saying he was assaulted, following which his medical examination was conducted at Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital.”

The trigger for the incident was reportedly the fact that the van overtook the car, after which the car driver allegedly chased it and forced it to stop by blocking its way.

The trio started using foul language with the van driver and the constable, which led to a heated argument between them; subsequently, the cop was assaulted, the police said.
