IPL 2024: Suryakumar Yadav likely to miss more matches for Mumbai Indians

World's number one T20 batsman Suryakumar Yadav will likely skip a few more IPL 2024 matches as he is still not fully recovered from sports hernia surgery. The National Cricket Academy is keeping track of his progress. India's T20I specialist Suryakumar Yadav has been missing the action in IPL 2024 for Mumbai Indians. "Surya is making very good progress and very soon he will be back playing for MI. However, he might have to sit out for a few more games, having missed the first two," a BCCI source said. Also Read: IPL 2024: Kieron Pollard encourages Maphaka after the loss against SRH While the Mumbai-based franchise is missing the services of Suryakumar, the Board of Control for Cricket in India doesn't want to take any chances with the batter's fitness. Keeping in mind the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, he is expected to play a huge role for the "Men in Blue." The T20 World Cup 2024 will be hosted in the USA and the West Indies in June. "For BCCI, the main concern is if he is on course for World T20 which he is. Obviously he will play for MI but after a sports hernia surgery, he can't be rushed," the source said. IPL 2024: Kieron Pollard encourages Maphaka after the loss against SRH

In the IPL 2024, after facing a loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians batting coach Keiron Pollard gave words of encouragement to the young South African sensational pacer Kwena Maphaka who had a horrific debut in the cash-rich league. In the first innings of the IPL 2024 match against SRH, Maphaka conceded 66 runs in four overs without securing a wicket. This is the worst figure by a bowler on the league's debut. In 2018, Basil Thampi conceded 70 runs against RCB. Having beaten up by world-class batsmen on the big stage, Maphaka looked quite shattered in his body language sometimes. Taking to Instagram, the West Indies legendary all-rounder Kieron Pollard cheered the young bowler with words of encouragement. Also Read: IN PHOTOS | IPL 2024, MI vs SRH: A match full of records! The Lankan has been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. He shot into the limelight at the U19 World Cup earlier this year, where he was awarded 'Player of the Tournament' honour for picking 21 wickets. The left-armer's 21 wickets are the most ever by a pace bowler in an edition of the U19 World Cup. He spearheaded South Africa's attack as they made the semi-finals in home conditions. The 17-year-old has already represented South Africa A and South Africa Emerging teams. Coming to the IPL 2024 match, Sunrisers Hyderabad was put to bat first by Mumbai Indians. MI got Mayank Agarwal (11) early. But fiery knocks came from Travis Head (62 in 24 balls, with nine fours and three sixes), Abhishek Sharma (63 in 23 balls with three fours and seven sixes) that powered SRH to 148/2 in their 10 overs. Abhishek-Head put on a 68-run partnership for the second wicket. Also Read: IPL 2024: Opening day registers record-breaking viewership Following a brief 48-run stand between Abhishek and Aiden Markram (42* in 28 balls, with two fours and a six), Heinrich Klaasen (80* in 34 balls, with four boundaries and seven sixes) formed a 116-run stand in 54 balls to take SRH to 277/3 in their 20 overs, the highest-ever IPL total. Gerald Coetzee (1/57), skipper Hardik Pandya (1/46) and Piyush Chawla (1/34) took wickets for MI. South African U19 star Kwena Maphanka was hit for 66 runs on his debut IPL game in his four overs. Chasing 278, openers Rohit Sharma (26 in 12 balls, with a four and three sixes) and Ishan Kishan (34 in 13 balls, with two fours and three sixes) gave MI a fine start, racing to 56 in 3.2 overs. After both openers were dismissed, Naman Dhir (30 in 14 balls, with two fours and two sixes) and Tilak Varma (64 in 34 balls, with two fours and six sixes) formed a 84-run stand, taking MI to 150 in 10.4 when Dhir was dismissed in an unbelievable counterattack. Tilak kept fighting for MI along with skipper Hardik Pandya (24 in 20 balls, with a four and six), taking MI to 182/4 in 14.1 overs at the time of Tilak's dismissal. In the death overs, Tim David (42* in 22 balls, with two fours and three sixes) battled it out for MI along with Pandya and Romario Shepherd (15* in six balls, with two fours and a six). But MI had been controlled well by SRH bowlers and restricted to a commendable 246/5 in 20 overs, losing by 31 runs. Skipper Pat Cummins (2/35) and Jaydev Unadkat (2/47) were the top bowlers for SRH. Shahbaz Ahmed also got a wicket. Abhishek took home the 'Player of the Match' award for his fifty. (With ANI Inputs)

Warner, Stoinis, Agar misses out on Cricket Australia's central contract

Veteran opening batsman David Warner who announced his retirement from ODI and Test cricket has been dropped from Cricket Australia's central contract for the 2024-25 season. Along with him, Ashton Agar and Marcus Stoinis were also snubbed from the contracts. Besides, Victoria opener Marcus Harris and pacer Michael Neser have also missed out on contracts that were offered to 23 players, according to a report by 'cricket.com.au'. Australia have a hectic season as they will feature in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies in June. Also, the Aussies will host a five-match test series against India in late November. David Warner missing out on the contract was expected as the veteran intended to pull the curtain on the game after the T20 World Cup 2024. He is currently busy in India with Delhi Capitals for the IPL 2024. Also Read: IN PHOTOS | IPL 2024, MI vs SRH: A match full of records! Stoinis is the most notable omission. However, the 34-year-old, who is currently playing with Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, remains in contention for the upcoming T20 World Cup despite missing Australia's recent tour of New Zealand with a back injury. Pacers Xavier Bartlett and Nathan Ellis are among those who have been offered contracts for the first time. Bartlett (25) and Ellis (29) are joined by Victoria and Adelaide Strikers batter Matt Short (28), and Western Australia all-rounder Aaron Hardie (25) as the four new faces on this year's central contract list. The four players have already made their international debut for Australia. Short and Hardie made their debuts during last year's T20 series in South Africa, while Ellis played in Australia's ODI and T20I tour of South Africa, and T20 campaigns in India and New Zealand. He, however, missed the home white-ball series against the West Indies due to a rib injury. "Matt, Aaron and Xavier have been extremely impressive in the early stages of their international careers," national selection chair George Bailey was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au "Their performances and the way they have embraced the international stage has been exciting to watch."The panel believes they have strong futures and are deserved of their contracts as they work towards striving to become regulars in the Australian setup." IPL 2024: Smith confused with Hardik's decision to hand Bumrah just one over

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya's decision to hand just one over to their lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah till the 13th over left Steve Smith confused. Sunrisers Hyderabad batsmen displayed a pure power-hitting show with the willow against Mumbai Indians. In the IPL 2024 match between SRH and MI, the hosts registered 277 runs for the loss of three wickets. Hyderabad broke the previous IPL record for the highest total in an innings which was 263 by RCB. Jasprit Bumrah was the second-most economical bowler in the IPL 2024 match between MI and SRH. Bumrah went wicketless but conceded just 36 runs in four overs. On the other hand, hosts' skipper Pat Cummins registered two wickets for 35 runs in four overs. Also Read: IN PHOTOS | IPL 2024, MI vs SRH: A match full of records! "I was perplexed with some of their bowling changes in the first innings for Mumbai. Bumrah bowled in the fourth over, he went for 5 and then we didn't see him again till the 13th over when they were on 173," Smith told host broadcaster 'Star Sports'. "All the damage had been done, you needed your best bowler to be coming back and take some wickets in that period and I think they missed a trick there bringing him back only in the 13th over," he pointed out. "I think he got a few things wrong, and that was the main one for me. I mean you can't have one of the best bowlers in the world bowling one over." Former Australia captain Smith feels that Bumrah's late reintroduction in the first innings made him become ineffective. "When the ball is going around like that, you've just got to bring your best bowler back earlier than you would have liked. It's just about adapting on the go and I'd have almost bowled Bumrah out by the 15th, 16th over, try to get some wickets, if he gets wickets, you slow the rate down anyway. "If the guy is batting at the end, doesn't matter who is bowling, we saw that really with Bumrah in the last two overs and he still got smacked with the bat at the back end," he explained. "So if he came back earlier and had taken some risks, things would have been really different and they got 277 and they could have been reduced to 240 and might have chased those down, so I was just perplexed that he bowled only one over up until the 13th over."Smith said it's hard to make sense of the power-hitting contest the match turned out to be. "...38 sixes in total, the ball was just going all over the place. It was an incredible game. Another former cricketer Brian Lara lauded SRH's Abhishek Sharma, who smacked a 23-ball 63. "Abhishek Sharma is one of my favourite young batters...He can hit it, he's not a big muscular guy, but when he hits the ball it stays hit. I think his was a special knock today," he said. Babar Azam

PCB looking to bring Babar Azam back as Pakistan captain

The Pakistan Cricket Board it appears has lost faith in the ability of Shan Masood and Shaheen Shah Afridi to lead the national side and feels former skipper Babar Azam is the best choice to captain the side once again. Also Read: Pandya will be booed louder in Mumbai, says Manoj Tiwary Babar had quit as Pakistan captain across all formats after his team failed to make it past the group stages during the ODI World Cup in India last year. While Masood was appointed captain in the Test format, Shaheen was made the T20I skipper. Sources in the PCB think-tank said the board had come to the conclusion that, with no viable option available, Babar was the best choice to lead the side again. “The funny part is that the powers that be appear to have lost faith in Shan Masood and Shaheen Shah Afridi’s ability to lead the national side in Test and T20 formats with the change in the board’s chairmanship,” a source confided. The source added: “Feelers have been sent out to Babar to find out if he is ready to take charge again and he has shown some reservations.”  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Pandya will be booed louder in Mumbai, says Manoj Tiwary

Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary expects Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya to be booed a “bit louder” when the team plays its first home IPL game in Mumbai on April 1 but he feels that the flamboyant all-rounder has the temperament to deal with it. Also Read: GT skipper Shubman Gill fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over-rate Pandya, who replaced Rohit Sharma as MI captain before the start of the season, was booed by fans in Ahmedabad when MI played against his former team Gujarat Titans on Sunday. MI lost the match by six runs and will take on Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium. “You have to see how he [Pandya] gets welcomed in Mumbai because I think he is going to get booed a bit louder, because as a fan, Mumbai fan or a Rohit Sharma fan, nobody expected that captaincy will be given to Hardik,” Tiwary said. “And despite Rohit giving five trophies to MI, he has to lose the captaincy. I don’t know what are the reasons but I think it has not gone down well with the fans. And that is the reaction which you see on the field,” he explained. However, Tiwary added: “Despite getting booed, he kept his calm, he kept his nerve, which is the sign of a good temperament.”  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. IPL 2024 | "MSD at number eight is crazy": Head coach Hussey

Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey said that the ‘Impact Player’ rule has lengthened their batting order, allowing former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to come in as late as number eight during this IPL. The ‘Impact Player’ rule, introduced from 2023 edition, allows each franchise to name five substitutes, one of whom could come on as a substitute during the course of the match.  Playing against Gujarat Titans here on Tuesday, CSK managed to post a match-winning total of 206 for six. However, with seven batters coming out to bat, there were no signs of Dhoni coming in even as his fans got a bit impatient. Also Read: IPL 2024: Rishabh Pant aims to secure season's first win vs RR “It’s definitely been a directive from head coach [Stephen] Fleming to keep pushing the game forward. The ‘Impact Player’ has lengthened the batting order, with MSD at number eight, which is crazy, and he is batting well [in the nets] at the moment,” Hussey told reporters during the post-game media interaction. Positive thinking   “Because of this, the batters up the order can take the positive [attacking] route. They certainly have the backing from the coaches and the captain. Even if they get out doing so, it’s fine, and they won’t be criticised. We want to keep playing fast.” Among the performers for CSK was New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra, who continued his blazing form with a 20-ball 46. Explaining how he worked with Rachin during the pre-season, Hussey stated that it was all about allowing him to “play his best cricket”. “He’s [Ravindra] had a great start; it’s awesome to watch. He’s come here with great energy and wants to learn more and make a positive impact on the team. He’s gone out there with a clear mind and a nice positive attitude,” he stated. Hussey feels that his work is mainly to ensure that Rachin stays in a positive frame of mind to produce optimum results.  Well-prepared Gaikwad It was two in two for new CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, replacing Dhoni, while Hussey termed him a ‘cricket-savvy guy’. “Rutu is fantastic and very well-prepared. He, along with Fleming and MSD get together to talk tactics before the game,” he reckoned. “But, the way he [Gaikwad] changes the field, he has a clear mindset, and the message to the bowlers is also clear. He does have some good support around him, but he is a smart and cricket-savvy guy who understands the game well.” One of the players being talked about for CSK was Sameer Rizvi, who struck ace GT spinner Rashid Khan for two sixes, and Hussey was all-praise for his natural hitting ability. “He’s [Rizvi] got some natural hitting ability, especially against spinners. He can hit a long way and is very clean.”  Promoting a rookie ahead of Dhoni was a “masterstroke” according to Hussey.  “It was a masterstroke from the think-tank as well, as we were expecting MSD to come out and play the last few balls. But, they realised Rizvi’s got some natural power against spin, and he delivered. The crowd loved it too.”  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. IPL 2024: Rishabh Pant aims to secure season's first win vs RR

Skipper Rishabh Pant will look to overcome his rustiness as Delhi Capitals (DC) aim for an improved batting display in their bid for a first win of the IPL season when they take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) here on Thursday. Pant’s much-anticipated return to action 453 days after he suffered grievous injuries in a horrific car accident, lasted just 13 balls (18 runs) with Punjab Kings winning by four wickets at their new home ground in Mullanpur. Also Read: IPL 2024: Hyderabad breaks previous record, posts 277 against MI Pant, though, displayed his usual lively demeanour behind the stumps and also effected the stumping of Jitesh Sharma. Having overcome the early jitters and nervousness in his first game, Pant would be eager to regain his mojo quickly as his match-up against the likes of Trent Boult, Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal would be the highlight of the contest. “It’s exciting to have your captain back in the team. He is our leader and heartbeat of this franchise and having him back is going to make this team a lot stronger,” head coach Ricky Ponting had said of Pant ahead of the IPL. Ponting chose David Warner and Mitchell Marsh to open the innings in the hope that the duo would score enough runs to take the pressure off Pant lower down the order. But the two failed.
