Mumbai University declares 41 exams 'dormant'

The University of Mumbai, which has been in the news for delaying results this year, has once again sparked a controversy after it declared 41 examinations as 'dormant'.  The move, aimed at reducing the examination staff's burden, will affect students repeating courses offered by the university.

The varsity said that it would revive the examination only if the repeater sends in an application through his/her college by August 20. If the student fails to do so, s/he would have to repeat the entire course again.

A circular issued by the university's director of examinations and evaluations reads, "A total of 41 examinations have been declared as dormant. Hence, the examination department will not make any pre-examination work like declaration of commencement dates, appointment of paper-setters or examiners unless any college informs about registration of candidate to any of these examinations."

Confirming the development, Deepak Vasave, director of examinations and evaluations, said, "This decision is taken through a resolution passed by the Board of Examination and Academic Council on the matter of some examinations, where no candidate or few of candidates appear."

A senior official from the varsity said, "The number of examinations held by the university is as high as around 500 because of many such small examinations. For example, at this time, the varsity may be conducting five different types of examinations for the Commerce stream. The varsity has to make all arrangements for these examinations starting from their registration to setting papers, conducting exam and paper correction too. All this causes immense burden on the staff."
