With guitar riffs and a tonal quality reminiscent of the American sensation, singer-songwriter Vernon Noronha is a new voice on the Indie scene

With a whispery vocal tone and plucking technique when playing the guitar, he earned the tag of being the desi John Mayer. "I take it as a compliment. I was following Mayer's style to get better, and I did improve. These days, people are calling me Jack Johnson because of the happy vibe in my songs. I don't feel bad at all. It is good to grow in their shadow," says singer-songwriter Vernon Noronha, ahead of his gig tonight.

The 27-year-old released his debut EP, Closer To Home, last year but at this venue, his listeners will watch him play renditions of classics. "It is a cover set but I will fit in a few originals depending on the crowd. It is not exactly a venue for Indie music. So, I may have to mix it up. If it is an Indie gig, people will primarily emerge for the music and then, food. Here, it may be different," he adds. But Noronha didn't dismiss the cover culture either. "It isn't an issue. We all have to. With fewer gigs around, you cannot live on original music; 90 per cent of the money comes from covers," he reasons.

Noronha will use the harmonica, along with the guitar, to play classics by Bob Dylan and Billy Joel. "I will perform Piano Man by Joel. I am also playing Rock With You (Michael Jackson), Better Together (Jack Johnson), Why Georgia (Johnâu00c2u0080u00c2u0088Mayer) and Bella Luna (Jason Mraz)," he informs. With sing along-type originals under his belt, the audience should watch out for songs like Come Back Jack and Lunch Box.

Currently, he is working on his new single and the second EP. "The single is called Dream Sandwich. It is about sleep paralysis, which I used to go through during college days," says Noronha, who has played at almost all venues in the city. "But, that happens once or twice. New Delhi and Bengaluru are hosting more Indie gigs. Today, it's tough to figure where to play original music with a band in the city," he signs off.
