A 46-year-old man, who was arrested in a fraud case, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at the Nalasopara police lockup yesterday night.


After his condition deteriorated, cops rushed him to the Vasai Virar Mahanagar Palika hospital, but he died during treatment. The deceased has been identified as Mahesh Mulmule (46), resident of Vile Parle area.


According to sources, the Arnala police arrested Mulmule on Wednesday, in a R55 lakh cheating case. He was produced before the Vasai court and sent to police custody till July 11.


Earlier, he used to run coaching classes, but later started cheating people by offering double returns on investments.

Sources said that he suddenly started vomiting at night and also complained of stomach pain. The cops admitted him to the hospital, but he died in the morning during treatment.

“The reason of his death is still unclear. We are waiting for the autopsy report,” said Jayant Bajbale, additional deputy superintendent of police.
