Udyan Sagar aka Nucleya is, inarguably, a name to reckon with on the EDM music circuit. Former member of 1998 electronica musicial act, Bandish Projekt, Nucleya now performs at some of the biggest stages globally. In fact, a couple of international collaborations are also in the pipeline, he reveals. On the sidelines of his gig at Bollyboom Dance Music Holi Party, a Bollywood electro-music festival, yesterday, he spoke to us about the resurrection of independent music in India, his interest in Bollywood, and the EDM scene in the country.

Excerpts from the chat:

As an EDM artiste, how do you think the genre has grown in India over the past decade?
It's fantastic how EDM has grown in India. In such a short span of time, the country has become one of the fastest emerging markets for the electronic music industry. The Indian audience is being introduced to newer sounds, and it's helping them become more aware of what's going on globally. Besides, more festivals are coming up and many international artistes are showing interest in coming down to India and building a fan base here.

What were your reasons for quitting Bandish Projekt and setting out as Nucleya?
There were multiple reasons. One was that we [band members] felt differently about the way the band's music should progress. So, we felt it was best to go our own way.

Good times seem to be back for independent music in India. Musicians are releasing albums and singles by the droves. What, according to you, has changed?
The Internet has enabled and spawned the rise of more artistes. You no longer need a record deal to be able to release your music. It's just a click away.

Careerwise, does Hindi film music interest you?
I grew up listening to a lot of film music from the '70s and '80s. So, it comes naturally to me. I am currently working on a few Bollywood projects, but it's too early to share details.

What's keeping you busy these days?
Since I have been travelling and performing extensively over the last couple of years, my only agenda, at this point, is to spend more time with family. I enjoy it [family time] thoroughly. My wife and son have been an integral part of my musical journey.
