As of day 7, the box office collection for 'Tubelight' hit the magic 100 crores, but distributers who were expecting a lot more from the Salman Khan starrer were left disappointed.  Being called one of the biggest debacles after Salman Khan’s 'Wanted', trade experts believe that 'Tubelight' despite its 100 crore turnover, its collections were expected to be a lot higher. Considering how Salman Khan’s movies do on Eid, distributors paid large sums of money for the movie’s theatrical rights, making 'Tubelight' an average revenue earner – one that won’t help them make a profit.

In a report by The Indian Express, the film has amassed around Rs 107.32 crores in nine days.  In a statement to Indianexpress.com, Girish Johar said, “Distributors have bought the film at high prices considering how Salman Khan’s film performs on Eid. They were expecting the film to do an overall box office business of Rs 300-350 crore so that they can make profit”.

According to Girish the TV and music rights will depend on the film’s overall collection. As of now, the theatrical right of the movie have been sold for Rs 132 crores, the TV and music rights have been sold for Rs 55 crores and 38 crores respectively.  “These days buyers except those who have bought theatrical rights make a box office link deal with makers where they dole out a certain figure to makers depending on how the film has performed at the box office. I am assuming that satellite rights buyers have also made a smart deal. So the whole economics of the pre-sale deals are bound to change,” Girish said.

Another factor that often played in Salman Khan’s favour was the fact that no other big movie was released in the same week as the movie. But in Tubelight’s case, even this didn’t help. Girish said that, “The public has not gone to watch the film. Had they liked Tubelight, people would have gone to watch the film after Eid. So I don’t think the absence of any big movie this weekend is going to benefit Salman Khan film”.

As per some sources that Indian Express spoke to, they said that people who invested in the film are likely to lose a sizeable amount of money. The source said, “Distributors who have bought the film’s theatrical rights have lost some money. They can lose around Rs 50-70 crore on the film”

Industry experts say that the film is likely to earn about Rs 125 crores at the box office.
