Following MiD DAY's report, the Mumbai Police has reportedly revoked the diktat against keeping coffee shops of five-star hotels open until the wee hours, within days of issuing it

Outrage by hoteliers and the people at large after MiD DAY broke the story on police directing five star hotels to shut their 24X7 coffee shops and discos at 1.30 am has reportedly made the Mumbai police revoke the diktat.

On Saturday, MiD DAY had reported ('Terror's latest victim: Your midnight hunger pangs') how the Mumbai Police had issued the order, which also applies to discotheques in the hotels, and cited security issues as the reason behind it.

The order had stated that eateries and other establishments running in the wee hours force the police to divert their manpower towards miniscule issues when they have the bogey of terrorism to battle.
MiD DAY had aired the strong views of hoteliers on the issue and had also reported how there was a possibility of a rethink.

According to the sources, the new rule had led to outrage in the entire hotel industry and even customers had reacted strongly to it. One of the hotel owners who had received the earlier order confirmed that a new letter had been issued to revoke it yesterday.

u00a0"There was no time and date mentioned in the earlier letter to tell us when we could expect the rule to be lifted. It was a ridiculous idea. On the one hand they had charged us for a licence to operate till late in the night and then directed us not to. We had raised objections and they seem to have made a difference," said the hotel owner.u00a0

A senior police officer confirmed the development. "The order has been revoked due to intense pressure from hoteliers. The coffee shops can now continue to operate like they did before," he said, on condition of anonymity.
