BEST, RInfra propose hike in power tariffs to recoup losses due to transmission, distribution and theftu00a0
Rs 170 crore is what Mumbaikars would have saved on their electricity bills had BEST and Reliance Infrastructure Ltd (RInfra) managed to check their transmission and distribution (T&D) losses and those from thefts.
BEST lost 10.3 per cent of its total power supply over the lastu00a0 year to theft, while RInfra sustained a loss of 11.5 per cent in the same period to T&D losses. The aggregate loss incurred by both these companies on this account stands at Rs 170 crore, for which, consumers will have to pay as much as 0.60 paise per unit more to cover losses.
An official from BEST said, "All our efforts to reduce T&D losses have failed in certain pockets of the city, where power thefts take place. We have proposed a hike of 10.5 per cent to recover our T&D losses."
The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has asked BEST to bring down T&D losses to 10 per cent. RInfra has similarly been asked to bring such losses to 10.5 per cent. Uttam Khobragade, general manager, BEST said, "The proposed tariffs are based on the basis of the expenses we incur. What we finally charge is decided by the MERC."
While BEST has demanded an increase of 45 per cent in tariffs, RInfra wants to increase its power tariffs in 2009-10 by 30 per cent.
MERC will declare new power tariffs in two weeks.
