Pune Crime Branch officials arrested five men, including a history-sheeter who was absconding for the last four years, and claim to have made their biggest ever arms seizure. Police recovered 12 country-made revolvers and 62 cartridges from the possession of the suspects.

Police identified the suspects as Raghunath Kashinath Dhawre (33) and Sunil alias Sonya Mohan Pardeshi (34) from Ahmednagar, Samir Vijay Bhalerao (24) and Santosh Maruti Chavan (26) from Sanaswadi, and Anil Kachru Salunke (25) from Aurangabad. An FIR has been registered against the accused with Bhosari police station.

Police officials said the suspects acquired the firearms from Madhya Pradesh and sold them here at the rate of Rs 20,000 to R25,000 per pistol in the city.

Acting on a tip-off received by Police Naik Raju Mache of Pune Crime Branch Unit IV, about the arms deal at Phugewadi, a police team nabbed Dhawre and Bhalerao on August 26. Bhalerao had come to buy a pistol and three cartridges from Dhawre. During interrogation, they revealed Salunke’s name, who was then arrested on September 3 at Sangamwadi in Pune.

Police then recovered one revolver and 10 cartridges from him. It was Salunke who led the police to Pardeshi, a notorious criminal wanted by Ahmednagar police for the last four years in three cases — one attempt to murder and three cases of rioting registered with Nevasa police station.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shahaji Solunke said that Pardeshi is also wanted in a dacoity case registered with CIDCO police station in Aurangabad. A search at Pardeshi’s house in Nevasa led to the seizure of three more pistols and 10 cartridges. We also recovered four pistols and 15 live cartridges hidden at his in-laws’s place in Kopargaon.”
