Pune: Nearly 24 hours after the mother of a newborn filed a complaint with the police claiming that a person, who was sharing her auto had fled with her daughter, it has been revealed that the lady had staged the entire incident. Police said that the mother had thrown her 10-day-old baby into a river and had made-up the story to cover her tracks.

The incident took place around 11.30 am on Wednesday morning. Reshma Shaikh, 21, a resident of Dapodi, had allegedly told her family that she was going to the hospital with her daughter, as the latter had taken ill.

Sometime later, Shaikh, a mum of two others, informed the family that a woman and an auto driver had kidnapped her daughter. They then filed a complaint with the police station.

In her complaint to the police, Shaikh said that she had hailed an autorickshaw at the auto stand near her home. A woman was already inside the auto. When they reached the hospital, Shaikh said that she had got down, along with her daughter. "I was trying to remove change from the purse, but my daughter was wailing and I was finding it difficult to handle her. I requested the woman to take my daughter in her lap so that I could get my purse out. But, as soon as I handed over my child, she pushed me down and fled with her in the same autorickshaw," Shaikh had said.

Inspector (crime) Ajit Ladke, who is investigating the case, had said that the police were scrutinising CCTV footage from the area.
However, in one footage, Shaikh was seen throwing the baby from Harris bridge. "We have sent our team to the site and alerted the fire brigade about the incident," said an official, on condition of anonymity.

The police will be filing a case against her.
