Ramzaan has ended, but food fest continues at Mohammad Ali Road

Mohammad Ali Road food trail

Eid-al-fitr is a festival that is celebrated with much enthusiasm all around the world. It also brings in the disappointment of the end of the month long Ramzaan, which all Mumbai food enthusiasts wait eagerly for the whole year. The by lanes of Mohammad Ali road come alive with lights and markets being set up, during this holy month. Kebabs, Shorba, and various sweets are sold in these lanes. Special menus come up and thousands throng to them tasting the food and living the history of bohri mohalla and surrounding areas.

For all those who missed the party this year, we have some good news. We bring a list of places that though are visited mostly during Ramzaan, are present all the year round. Egg malpua, kebabs, Shorba and Sandal will not be seen for a whole year, but, there are still some delectable places that are a must visit from these lanes; places which have stood the test of time.

Chicken Hakimi and Shami Kebab at Noor Mohammadi
Noor Mohammadi is known mainly because of another chicken preparation that dots its menu – “Chicken Sanju baba”. Legend has it, that Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt liked his chicken prepared in a certain way (definitely not our favorite) and that recipe has gone up in the menu. We recommend to instead try their Shami Kebab. The kebabs disappear every evening by 7, and if you are not there in time, you might miss them even when the crowd is thin.

Chicken Hakimi on the other hand is available most times. It is a tandoori chicken which has been lightly poached in ghee and the tandoori marinade. The result: tender pieces of rich flavor full chicken which will leave you wanting for more.

Baida roti and Mutton sandwich at Jilani fast food corner
Jilani’s during Ramzaan is known for their Bheja Kalimirch and Pav. Off season, it is difficult to find the preparation, but you can still gorge on their cheesy, melt in your mouth Chicken cheese baida rotis. Another must try from Jilani’s is the mutton kasturi naan sandwich. Kasuri methi adds a slight bitterness to the dish which makes it fit for the best of restaurants.

Just in case you would still want to try Bheja fry and pav (pictured above), give them a call a day before and they just might be able to fix some for you.

Bara Handi at Valibhai Payawala
Valibhai at its erstwhile location was a 150+ years old institution which shut its doors a couple of years back when the whole area went under redevelopment. The who’s who of the food industry wrote about the history of this place, and the shutdown was a moment of big disappointment and sadness for Mumbai culinary landscape.

They have come back this Ramzaan, in a new modern avatar. AC room, clean and shiny tables with the same unaltered taste of the food. We are definitely not complaining. Find them on the Sardar Vallabhai Patel road, off Mohammad Ali road.

Special khameeri roti at Khan
Dishing out 30,000+ rotis in a day this establishment also got displaced and shifted to their new location not too far. Go looking for the perfect khameeri rotis and ask for the special. The special is topped with sesame seeds and crisped up a bit, getting close to the texture of a Mediterranean lavash.

Buy some butter from the nearest shop and hand it over to the bakers, which when applied on these specials is a delight for bread lovers. The bakers do not provide their own ghee (butter), and this is made very clear in the very beginning (see picture above).

Watermelon and rose Sherbet at Imam Sherbet

The freshness of the fruit, the aroma of the rose syrup and some cut up watermelon for that added texture. This sherbet can bring back people from the dead.

Saancha icecream at Taj icecream
Mumbai’s famous Natural's Icecream is a pale copy of this 125+ year old establishment. They come in various fruits and dry fruit flavours. If it is not too crowded, ask for a small tour of their kitchen. Learn how the sancha works, which is still churned by hand in this establishment.

Do not forget to try the peru (guava) and sitaphal (custard apple) – author’s favorite.
