Thomson Andrews

"The video for my next song, I got Your Money, depicts a narrative of how the protagonist (that's me) is a rich boy and has a lot of girls going crazy for him, as he's got the treasure (money)," says singer/songwriter Thomson Andrews, "He is okay with that fact as well until he realises that the one girl he truly loves actually turns out to be a gold digger and cheater, and so he dumps her. He walks away trying to bring a positive change to his life." If the story line seems similar to a Chris Brown song, then you would be right. Andrews has a strong musical background — he has sung for AR Rahman and Shankar Eshaan Loy, and is a constant on the jingle scene.

He is also a part of the popular Acappella ensemble, Raaga Trippin'. His new song, which releases on March 15, and which had us bopping along thanks to his R&B vibe and Andrews's sweet vocals, made us feel we were watching an Indian version of Bruno Mars's 24K Magic. It's flashy, shot in Los Angeles, with Andrews gallivanting in a fancy car with some fancy ladies, and has been shot, conceptualised and directed by Hollywood director Stephen Shadrack.

What also sets the video apart is its unique styling. Anyone following Andrews on social media will know his penchant for some eye-popping fashion. In this video, Andrews styles in the same garb as hip-hop stalwarts, Shaggy and Akon, and more recently, Bruno Mars. Interestingly, the costumes were styled by LA-based La Maison De Fashion, which has also styled videos for Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and the queen herself, Beyonce.

"You are right. My references for the visuals were a few Chris Brown and Bruno Mars's videos, which I absolutely love," says Andrews. The video shows him sporting heavy gold chains, stylized sun glasses, sparkling hats and chest belts, that go well with all-black and all-white ensembles. "Angelina Pitt from the boutique styled the entire music video with her edgy-chic costumes. She has also styled actors in the TV show, Empire, and so I decided to not give her any directions, and just go with the flow. I trusted her completely.

Look at her resume!" What stands out is how Andrews carries himself in the video, and that could only come with an innate sense of style and a thirst for experimentation. "Everyone who knows me will vouch for the fact that I've sported almost all the colours of the rainbow on my head by now. Even Mohawks, which I know I can carry off. I think the secret to this is to not be afraid of any kind of experimenting, and that's me at the core."
