Biryani isn’t a dish that one typically expects on menus of quick service restaurants (QSR). We came across a new entrant on the packed Powai food-scape called The Brothers’ Biryani House (TBBH) that thinks otherwise. With this in mind, we trained our gastronomic senses to go easy on the ‘slow-cooked’ adage.

We liked the balanced menu of TBBH, with equal options for vegetarians and non- vegetarians, as well as a section on kebabs if you wish to have a full meal. We opted for the Mutton Shammi Kebab (Rs 230) and Paneer Cheese Kebab (Rs 220). The mutton kebabs didn’t impress — the meat wasn’t well-cooked and it lacked a kick of flavour. However, the paneer kebabs were lip-smacking. The delicate pieces of paneer, wrapped in cheese, laced with gentle spices to keep texture play the king of this dish.

The next dish, Murgh Dum Biryani (Rs 220) fared well, and arrived at our table in record time. The portions of chicken (with bone) were generous and got us in a good mood. For the vegetarians, the Paneer Hyderabadi Biryani (Rs 210), served with mirchi ka salan was an explosion of fresh flavours, mainly coriander and cloves. The salan made for great accompaniment.

It’s after this relatively comfortable ride that things went awry. We ordered the Murgh Hyderabadi Biryani (Rs 220) which turned out to be a twin of the paneer version with meat replacing paneer. The Prawn Masala Biryani (Rs 300) was too spicy for our liking; the chilli overpowered all else. The mutton in the Mutton Kheema Biryani (Rs 250) was chewy despite being minced. By now, the flavours in all three biryanis began to overlap the palate, and we could not decipher one from the other.

Thankfully, our meal ended on a good note with the Gulab Jamun (Rs 70). If you don’t mind food prepared in fast food mode and are willing to overlook a few hiccups, TBBH is a good place to drop by for a quick lunch. For dishes cooked with precision, you will need to head elsewhere.
