Box office: Salman Khan's 'Tubelight' fails to light up on Eid

An Eid release is usually locked for Salman Khan, whose previous outings, including 'Sultan' (2016) and 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' (2015), had managed to rake in good numbers on the festive day. But, his latest war-drama, 'Tubelight', has failed to keep up with the trend.


Even though trade analysts had expected the film to perform better on Monday, following its unimpressive opening weekend collection, 'Tubelight', ironically, recorded a drop in collections on Eid, managing to only garner Rs 19.09 crore.


Attempting to throw light on the unexpected turn of events, trade pundit Amod Mehra says, "It's shocking to see Salman's film performing so poorly. I think people consider him a non-actor and go to enjoy the dialogue baazi and action in his films. But that's not what they witness in 'Tubelight'. The audience couldn't connect to the film at all. It's a damp squib."

Trade analyst Komal Nahta however disagrees with Mehra and argues that it is Tubelight's script that is the culprit. "People would watch an actor in any role, provided that the script is good. In the case of 'Tubelight', the writing is full of plot holes. The collection on Eid is lower than the previous days, which is the worst news a film's unit can receive, especially when it is a Salman-starrer. He has ruled the festival until now. The film has been rejected by the public."

Mehra adds that the distributors are going to suffer heavy losses. "Salman is seen crying throughout the film and that's going to be the case for the distributors as well. The cost at which the film was sold is really high, so recovery is going to be difficult. I estimate that the film will manage to do lifetime business of about Rs 140 crore."
