SC refuses to relax Dahi Handi rules

The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the application filed by Guinness World Record holder Jai Jawan Govinda Pathak, to allow them to build the human pyramids without following its directives this year.

The Mumbai police, that has granted permission to around 3,387 mandals this year has circulated the Supreme Court order copies to all senior police inspectors, to ensure that all mandals follow it.

On Tuesday Jogeshwari based mandal Jai Jawan had approached the Supreme Court, asking for relaxation this year to the cap of human pyramids over 20 feet high and participation of boys as Govindas below age 18 in the Dahi Handi festival.

The bench of Justices A R Dave and L Nageshwarrao rejected the plea saying that it was very scary to increase the height, and also asked if they were getting an Olympic medal for this.

The petitioners also argued that since minors are banned now height restrictions should be lifted.

Mumbai police spokesperson Ashok Dudhe had said that they have granted permission to around 3,387 mandals and senior police inspectors have been given a copy of the SC order that restricted the height of human pyramids and participation of minors in today’s event.

“Around 10 to 15 constables will be posted at each Handi and they will monitor the situation,” said a senior police officer.

The Bombay High Court had said a three-member committee should monitor the Handis and they should have a police officer, a ward officer and one elected representative or respected person from the area with them.
