Catch three plays that aced the competition at a popular inter-collegiate festival

Shakespeare with a twist

A scene from To Be Or Not To Be

Kaleidoscope 2016 marked the 31st year of the inter-collegiate festival of Sophia College, which saw participation from 70 plus colleges. A theatre event titled To Be or Not to Be, organised by the Performing Arts team, had colleges perform modern renditions of Shakespeare’s classics. The winners of the event, ISME College, IHM College and Sophia College are all set to perform for Zest at the National Centre for Performing Arts.

The 10-minute English play, The Shrew That Cannot Be Tamed, presents a twist in the climax of the classic, The Taming of the Shrew. The last scene of the play shows the protagonist Kate portraying a girl of 2016. The play, To Be Or Not To Be, also twists the end. Portia, who is now single and has been unsuccessful in saving her husband Bassanio, bumps into three young men — Romeo, Shylock and Caesar — who try and win her heart. The Merchant of Venice will feature the courtroom scene set in today’s times.
