Shameful behaviour

What happened at the Vidhan Bhavan yesterday was a shameful act, as the state is not known for such an incident wherein an assistant police inspector is roughed up by its legislators. The act of taking the law into their hands by the lawmakers and that too outside the Vidhan Bhavan is something that the people of Maharashtra will find hard to digest and should not be proud of, considering the legacy of stalwarts who not only guided but led several national and state political movements.u00a0

The behaviour of our lawmakers that led to the cop leaving the premises on a stretcher and onto a hospital bed has brought a huge embarrassment to the state. Whatever may be the explanation of the legislators, they are not expected to behave in this highly unacceptable manner. Vasai MLA Kshitij Thakur is a first timer and has a lot to learn in his first term. He had every right to lodge his protest over the treatment meted out to him. But this action is uncalled for. Moreover, it seems even his senior colleagues failed to guide him.

However, the twist to the entire tale is that why did the matter of ill treatment to Thakur have to be first raised in state council when he is the member of the state Assembly. It was debated in the council earlier where the Home Minister expressed an apology.

On Tuesday the matter figured in the Assembly when Thakur sought to move a privilege motion. The Prithviraj Chavan-led government owes several answers to the state administration and the people of the state. But he failed to provide an answer yesterday and instead went to face the fury of Congress legislators who were demanding the API’s suspension. Whatever may be the fault of the policeman, legislators have no right to punish him or anybody from the state.u00a0
