Shriya Pilgaonkar on being part of a romantic comedy and what it’s like to be raised in a super-fun family

Shriya Pilgaonkar talks about her 'super-fun' family and more...

In the play Internal Affairs

In a listicle published by a magazine not too long ago, Shriya Pilgaonkar, along with a few other debutante actresses, was called the next probable Deepika Padukone. "I love Deepika, but I'd rather be the new Shriya," she had responded with a smile. When we caught up with the 27-year-old actor-director ahead of her 66th performance in the popular rom-com play Internal Affairs, she spoke with characteristic candour.

"I don't believe in one-word answers to questions on career," says Pilgaonkar, when asked about her training as a child to become a professional swimmer, her love for languages, and being a Kathak dancer. "Whatever you do in life adds to what you become," she shares. True to her views, Pilgaonkar, who made her Bollywood debut with Fan last year, has acted in a French film by Oscar-winning director Claude Lelouch, directed and acted in shorts films, and continues to perform on stage. "Though I am focussed on acting now, I will remain involved in projects that intrigue me. Currently, I am excited to work on a short film with Terribly Tiny Talkies, which will be out next month."

Shriya with parents Sachin and Supriya

What has it been like to be the daughter of well-known actors, Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar? "We're a fun household. If I wasn't my parents' daughter, I would have loved to live with them as a roommate. We share our love for food, travel and cinema, and it makes our conversations enriching. They understand an actor's struggle," she reveals. "People often talk about star kids and nepotism, but only when they are not convinced by the talent before them."
