Prison Break costume designer Sonu Mishra on the challenges of working on the American drama

Prison Break costume designer: Characters must have a timeless appeal

Mumbai-born Sonu Mishra never imagined she would be a part of the American television drama Prison Break, but the costume designer, now among the most celebrated in international television, says dreams do come true.

Mishra, who wasn't associated with the previous seasons, given that "the international crew often changes according to people's availability", tells mid-day, "We worked on the texture, colours and style of the costume of the cast of Prison Break. After a long conversation with the makers, we decided the characters must have a timeless appeal. None of the clothes used in this season have any resemblance to what the actors have worn in the past." However, Mishra's work doesn't stop after her designs are approved. "Our costumes are amended as per every development. It changes when the actor has to look clean, dirty or even when he's smeared in blood."

Rome-based Mishra's repertoire boasts of films like Gangs Of New York (2002), and Luther (2003), apart from TV series including Leonardo (2011), among others, but she hasn't worked on Indian shows yet. "The opportunity hasn't arrived. I would love to work on an Indian show, someday. I've worked on an Italian film, which was shot in India and travelled across the country for it. It was wonderful."

She admits she isn't familiar with the developments in the field in the country, but laments the lack of options available for renting attires. "Costume rental shops are a big help when you are working on a show or film, especially when you don't have sufficient time on hand. In Mumbai, there are limited ways of renting costumes. Rental shops are good resources to have."
