Bombay Scottish School Mahim, who were losing quarter-finalists last year, emerged champions beating Navy Children School Colaba 5-4 via sudden death to clinch the Subroto Mukherjee inter-school U-17 boys football title, organised by the District Sports Office at the Mumbai Schools Sports Association ground in Azad Maidan on Saturday.

Both teams tried their best to score in regulation time but failed, as it was hard to control the ball in the muddy and slippery pitch conditions given the heavy downpour throughout the day. After finishing goalless in regulation time, both teams- headed for the tie-breaker. In the shootout, the scores were tied four each after five attempts each.

Ayan Desai, captain Devansh Kishore, Pranay Choudhary and Shaunit Doijode scored a goal each for the Mahim school, while Rohit Pandey, Harsh Vardhan, Rahul Chand and Aryan Dash netted for the Colaba outfit.

Mindgames in sudden death
In the ensuing sudden death, Bombay Scottish replaced their regular goalkeeper Shaunit with Ayan in a bid to unsettle the opposition. And it paid off. Navy-s Naveen Kumar hit the goalpost to hand Bombay Scottish the title. Despite the loss Navy-s coach Zakir Husain was pleased with his wards as his school had made the final for the first time.

Coach not disappointed
"I am not disappointed at all. We were not even expected to reach the final. Actually, their Bombay Scottish original goalkeeper was very good. Their ploy of mentally unsettling us by changing the goalie worked," Husain told mid-day.

It could have been double delight for the Scottish side as their girls too were in the U-17 final against Cathedral and John Cannon School Fort. However, a late strike Kyra Agarwal saw the Fort school emerge victorious by a slender 1-0 margin.

Anthony Fernandes, who coaches both the Bombay Scottish boys and girls teams, was delighted with his both his teams though. "This being my first year as head coach, I am satisfied with the performance of both the boys and girls team," Fernandes said.

Don Bosco win
Earlier, in the boy-s U-14 category, Don Bosco Matunga beat Cathedral and John Cannon 2-1 to emerge triumphant. Keith Fernandes and Arzan Pantaki scored a goal each for the Matunga outfit, while Jaden Irani struck for Cathedral.
