S N Nadkarni, a resident of Maharshi Karve Road, said, "Mumbai has a history of thefts of public utility items even dustbins and manhole covers being stolen and the BMC has failed to address the problem. Within days of installing bus stops, seats made of steel were stolen. Despite this, they have come up with a beautification plan with steel rods. Crores of public money goes down the drain. Why do they repeat these mistakes?" asked Nadkarni.
Though the residents appreciate the initiative, they feel the vagabond menace in the area should have been cleared first.
"They have unnecessarily used stainless steel railings between Marine Lines and Charni Road. A railing measuring a foot costs Rs 400. What is the point of having such beautification when the footpath on this stretch has so many shanties. It is impossible to walk along the stretch because of the foul smell," said resident Mahesh Pavaskar.
V G Bole, assistant municipal commissioner, C ward, said, "Security of public property cannot be guaranteed. We are doing our best to keep them secured. However, people of the area should be alert and alert authorities."
