"He is one of the most passionate men I've ever met; a well-deserved composer, not only for this award, but for all his compositions and his body of work. Very few people know how he works. Anu Malik is the only composer in India, who can compose his song in 40 seconds. Have you ever met any such person? I challenge any composer who can compose a song in 40 seconds.

"You tell him to make a song on 'doori', you have just said the word and he will just start with it, because he breathes his music, he thinks in music, he lives with music, that is called the genuine music man, Anu Malik," said Ghai at an event to felicitate Malik for his contribution to the industry.

The two have worked together in the Hrithik Roshan-Kareena Kapoor starrer "Yaadein", of which the title track is very popular and admired. Ghai thinks the song is among Malik's best five compositions, and was surprised that it wasn't mentioned in the audio-visual of his achievements at the event. He even jokingly termed the video's creator a "duffer" for not knowing real music.

"He (Malik) has given much better songs,10 times better songs than what you shown in this, he is a man with classical knowledge, he is a man with melodies, he is much deeper than what it looks on screen," he added.

After ruling the industry in the 1990s and early 2000s with numerous popular albums, Malik witnessed a unimpressive phase in the late 2000s, with comparatively lesser number of films, and which hardly created any impact. But he has in a way bounced back with his music for the film "Dum Laga Ke Haisha", which even fetched him the Zee Cine Award for Best Music.
