The 27-year-old inmate in Thane Central Jail, who committed suicide on Monday night, hung himself with a towel in a toilet on the premises as he was frustrated and depressed with his life inside. The Thane Nagar police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the matter further.

Desperate measures
According to jail sources, the deceased, identified as Siraj Aalam Ramzan Ali Shaikh, is a resident of Kandivli. On December 2, 2015, he was sent to Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai by the Borivli court on the charge of kidnapping a minor under the false pretext of marriage and then raping her. “On February 13, 2016, he was transferred to Thane Central Jail. Since then, he was here as his case was under trial in the Borivli court,” said a jail officer.

Speaking to mid-day, the deceased’s younger brother Samir said, “I met Siraj last Wednesday… every time he used to ask us to get him out on bail. On Wednesday, he said to me that if we didn’t get him out by October 1, he would accept the crime in court, warning us that he would then be inside for 10 years. He told us that he is frustrated and harassed with the life inside and desperately wanted to come out.”

Unaccounted for
Siraj’s body was found after jail officers realised that he was missing during the counting at 6 pm on Monday, which was started after distribution of the dinner around 5.30 pm.

“We searched each and every barrack for him. We then went to the factory on the premises as, at times, he used to help other inmates there. After a long search, at 7.15 pm when we went inside the toilet of the factory, we found him hanging with a towel. We came to know about the incident at around 7:15 pm. We immediately called for a doctor and brought him down, but he was pronounced dead,” said an officer.

Superintendent of Thane Central Jail, VB Vayachal said, “A detailed panchanama was done by the tehsildar and the Thane Nagar police station. A case of accidental death has been registered.”
