Goals from Viraj Narvekar, Ishan Deb and Ved Walavalkar ensured Gokuldham High School (Goregaon) a 3-0 win over Balmohan Vidyamandir School (Dadar) in the Division III pre-quarterfinal of the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA)-organised inter-school under-16 football tournament at Azad Maidan yesterday.

The Goregaon outfit set out with the right intent of attacking and controlling the ball. Balmohan did not put their best foot forward in the must-win game. It took only seven minutes for Gokuldham to open their account when striker Viraj took full advantage of a blunder created by the opposition's Ishan Mhapsekar. Ishan's pass from the midfield reached Viraj, who was standing near the goalpost. Viraj then wasted no time to smash it into the net.

Gokuldham strengthened their attack after the first goal. Midfielder Ishan struck his side's second goal in the 16th minute thanks to Krish Kaushik who created the goal-scoring opportunity when he fed Ishan with a good pass from the midfield.

The final goal was scored by Ved in the 35th minute. He dribbled the ball all the way from the midfield to the opposition penalty spot from where he launched the ball into the net. Balmohan 'keeper Anish Talele left his position and ran forward, but that did not affect Ved's rhythm too much.

Meanwhile, in the other pre-quarter final contest, Maneckji Cooper School (Juhu) beat DYPA (Dadar) 2-0. Aman Khanna and Omar Patel scored for the Juhu team. Maneckji Cooper, adopting a 4-3-3 formation, were passing the ball really well. Midfielder Aman scored in the 12th minute, while winger Omar Patel hammered the second in the 16th minute, thanks to a good assist from Merzy Sukhia.

Nihar Narvekar wins hearts with kind gesture
BalmohanVidyamandir School's Nihar Narvekar stood out with his sporting spirit during the MSSA under-16 Division III pre-quarterfinal clash against Gokuldham High School (Goregaon) at Azad Maidan yesterday. During the last 10 minutes, Gokuldham's Ved Walavalkar developed severe cramps and collapsed on the ground. Seeing Ved in distress, Nihar immediately went to help him.

"We usually do not see such things happening on the field between rival teams. It was really kind of Nihar to help me," Ved told mid-day while Nihar explained: "We have always been taught to help others in need, so I just did my duty. Way to go, Nihar!
