Vivek Jain was voted chairman of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) after Zavaray Poonawalla stepped down from the committee due to health reasons during its 101 Annual General meeting (AGM) at the Mahalaxmi yesterday.

Emotional Zavaray
An emotional outgoing RWITC chief Zavaray, who has the evening racing programme and Derby sponsorship as two of the major highlights during his tenure, said that he would always be ready to help the club in any capacity he can.
Looming challenges
Jain, on the other hand, agreed that there are challenges like "lease and club finances" looming for the RWITC. "The lease issue where the club's lease is over and needs to be renewed has to be worked on.
"It has been hanging for three years. Then, the Shiv Sena wants the racecourse for a theme park. "We have to sit down with the Sena for meetings, everything has to be done in conjunction with the club," said the newly-elected chairman, emphatically admitting that these two will be major issues for the club, in the near future.
