Better sex drive: According to researchers at a reputed American university, eating 75 gm of the nuts each day can increase a man's virility and the health of his sperm. The team found that men aged between 21-35, who regularly ate walnuts, had sperm with enhanced vitality and movement. Walnuts are rich in a natural plant source of omega-3, a type of fatty acid thought to be critical to sperm development.

A cure for cancer? Although this has been dispute by health experts, black walnuts are believed to be a potential cancer cure, on the basis that they kill a "parasite" responsible for the disease. Scientists in Spain recently discovered that walnuts cut the risk of dying from cancer by 40 per cent and from cardiovascular disease by at least 55 per cent. In general, walnut eaters in the research had a 39 per cent lesser risk of death and walnut eaters in particular a 45 per cent reduced threat.

Helps fight ageing: A recent study by a reputed medical institution in the US found that a daily diet including walnuts may reduce the risk of physical function impairments throughout the ageing process in women. Women who consumed 1-2 servings of walnuts per week (1/4 cup per serving) showed reduced risk of developing impairments in physical functions, the study said.

Walnuts are unique among nuts in that they are primarily composed of polyunsaturated fat (13 grams per ounce), which includes alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the plant-based omega-3 fatty acid. They are the only nut to contain a significant amount of ALA with 2.5 grams per one ounce serving, the team noted.

Improved heart health: Walnuts, both roasted and raw, are great when it comes to protecting your heart, according to new research. They are packed with the highest amount of polyphenols, compounds thought to reduce heart disease risk by lowering blood cholesterol levels, improving blood flow, and reducing inflammation. Plus, like all nuts, walnuts are loaded with protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
