Hike vs WhatsApp: The invisible fight between the messengers

After WhatsApp, Hike too incorporates video calling feature

Ever since Hike has been launched, it is seen competing head on head with WhatsApp. So after WhatsApp introduced the video calling feature in its beta version, Hike too included the video calling feature on Thursday.

The results of testing Hike’s video calling feature turned out to be positive. It is seen that depending on the connection, Hike will automatically adjust video and voice quality. The feature comes with ‘Live Preview’, very similar to Google Duo's Knock Knock feature. It helps see the preview of a caller even before he picks up the call. The video calling feature is available on Android phones as of now, but very soon it will be rolled out on iOS platforms. In case of video calling feature of WhatsApp, it is seen that even with good internet connections, the audio output of video calls seem to loose clarity.

Users on the beta version of WhatsApp on Android will be able to see a 'Video Call' and 'Voice Call' choices when they tap the top dialer button. But one must ensure that the downloaded version of voice call is at least 2.16.318.

On the other hand, though both WhatsApp and Hike offer voice calling feature, WhatsApp leads to more clear and uninterrupted voice calls even with 2G network. Though users might face call delays, yet the call quality improves with conversation. Voice calling feature on Hike runs successfully when used with high internet speed, but seems to suffer miserably with low internet speed.

Both Hike and WhatsApp comes with simple user interface. Still, compared to WhatsApp’s billion plus downloads on playstore, Hike seems to have only an estimated 50 million users. Also, like many other chat messengers, Hike too suffers from sheer traction and number of daily users. However, one useful feature of Hike is the ability to SMS to a contact person who is not active on Hike or does not have Hike installed on his phone.

Hike aims to be more like WeChat rather than like WhatsApp. This will probably help communication around the messenger work well and result in more users as compared to the latest numbers.
