Late on Tuesday night, traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was held up for a while, after a motorist spotted a woman's body lying in a pool of blood and informed the police control room. Cops and officials of the Infrastructures Developers Limited immediately rushed to the spot and started investigating the matter.

Case registered
A case of accidental death has been registered with the Khalapur police station. However, police believe that it might be a case of murder. According to the cops, the body was found near Temburni village. Khalapur sub-inspector Ambika Audrey is investigating the case, along with senior police inspector JA Shaikh. An official from the expressway control room said, "Around 10.30 pm, the body was found on the second lane of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. We immediately alerted the police and rushed the woman to the nearest hospital. But she was declared brought dead."

Injuries on back and head
Speaking to mid-day, a police officer said, "The woman was wearing a Punjabi suit. She had a Hanuman tattoo on her right shoulder. Even though no bag or identity card has been recovered from the spot, it seems that she was from Mumbai. She sustained head injuries and had bruises on her back."

"Initially, it appeared to be an accident, but the post-mortem report suggests that she was hit with a sharp-edged weapon. We are probing the case from all possible angles," said the officer.

He further said, "We are yet to get any clue in the matter. Our team is going through the CCTV cameras at the toll plaza. Further investigation into the matter is on."
