Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday asked his US counterpart Donald Trump to avoid remarks and actions that could escalate the already-tense situation in the Korean Peninsula as the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to denuclearise the region.
The two leaders spoke over phone to discuss the escalating tension after North Korean lea-der Kim Jong-Un threatened the US this week to fire missiles at Guam, a US island territory, after the US sponsored a resolution imposing new economic sanctions on Pyongyang over its missile and nuclear weapons programmes.
Xi told Trump that China is ready to work with the US to "appropriately resolve" the issue, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
"The relevant side must at present exercise restraint, and avoid words and actions that exacerbate tensions on the Korean peninsula," the report quoted Xi as saying.
Meanwhile, recent satellite images suggest North Korea could be preparing for fresh submarine-based ballistic missile tests, an expert in North Korean defence and intelligence said on Friday.
A top American commander feels that India can play a role in defusing the North Korean crisis by helping the leadership in Pyongyang to understand the seriousness of the threat posed by its nuclear programme. Admiral Harry Harris, commander of the US Pacific Command, says it is for India to decide on what kind of role it wants to play. “I think India’s voice is a loud voice, that people pay attention to. So, I think that India could help North Korea, perhaps, understand the seriousness by which US views that threat,” Harris says.
Guam issues nuke guidelines
Guam posted emergency guidelines on Friday to help residents prepare for any potential nuclear attack after a threat from North Korea to fire missiles in the vicinity of the US Pacific territory. While the governor of Guam shrugged off the North’s missile warning and said there was no heightened threat, the government issued a preparedness fact sheet. The guidelines cover what to do before, during and after a nuclear attack.
