A fun day out with friends turned fatal for a 26-year-old from Mumbai, when he jumped into a flowing stream at the Girdhar waterfall near Lion’s Point in Lonavala. Unable to gauge the strength of the water current, he slipped into a 15-foot-deep pit and died on the spot.

The Lonavala police reached the spot and, with help from locals, fished out the body. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Dhaval Parmar, a resident of Andheri. They have registered an accidental death case and are investigating the matter.

Fatal plunge
Senior inspector Chandrakant Jadhav said, "Parmar had come to the spot with four of his friends in a car. He had parked his car near Lion’s Point, which is a big tourist attraction."

"Everyone was enjoying near the stream. Eager to swim, Parmar jumped into the water but got swept away by the current and slipped into the pit," he added. "As it was raining heavily, no one could hear his cries for help. Later, during the search operation, his body was found."

Rules not followed
Sub-inspector Shivaji Darekar said, "We rushed to the spot and, with the help of locals fished out his body. Even though a signboard has been placed at the spot, asking people not to jump in the water, nobody pays heed to it. Many tourists have died in a similar manner."
