India Drone Strike: Navy unveils drone attack images on India-bound ship

Days after the drone attack on merchant vessel MV Chem Pluto on Dec 23, the vessel safely reached Mumbai on Dec 25. Soon the vessel reached Mumbai, latest images emerging from the vessel showed the damage caused by the drone attack. The merchant ship, MV Chem Pluto reached Mumbai for damage assessment, repair, and maintenance. Analysis was carried out by Indian Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Team followed by a joint investigation by various agencies. MV Chem Pluto, with 20 Indian and one Vietnamese crew member on Dec 23 caught fire after it was attacked by a suspected drone. The merchant vessel commenced its voyage from the UAE on Dec 19 and was bound for New Mangalore port with an arrival date of Dec 25. Soon after the India drone attack, the Indian Navy deployed multiple Guided Missile Destroyers in various areas of the Arabian Sea. Indian Navy deployed INS Mormugao, INS Kochi, and INS Kolkata to maintain deterrence. Meanwhile, MV Chem Pluto has been cleared for further operation by its company-in-charge in Mumbai. Houthi forces in Yemen have been targeting commercial ships in the Red Sea, claiming the attacks as revenge against Israel. Meanwhile, India, a strong advocate for the free movement of commercial shipping, is monitoring these attacks.

ISRO brings back Chandrayaan-3 propulsion module to Earth's orbit

ISRO successfully brought back Chandrayaan-3 Propulsion Module to the Earth orbit. It was brought back to the Earth’s orbit after exceeding its lunar mission objectives. It also demonstrated India's ability to not only launch objects to the Moon but also bring them back. This accomplishment shows that ISRO can restart engines on the moon and operate equipment. The primary objective of Chandrayaan-3 was to demonstrate a soft landing near lunar south-polar region. The spacecraft was launched on July 14, 2023, on board the LVM3-M4 vehicle from SDSC, SHAR. Chandrayaan-3 Vikram Lander made its historic touchdown on the Moon on August 23. The scientific instruments in the lander and rover were operated continuously for 1 lunar day. According to ISRO, the mission objectives of Chandrayaan-3 have been completely met. The initial plan was to operate this payload for about three months during the mission life of PM. Currently, Propulsion Module orbiting Earth, crossed its first perigee on Nov 22 with an altitude of 1.54 lakhs km. According to ISRO, the orbit period is nearly 13 days with a 27-degree inclination.

Chandrayaan 3: Pragyan Rover traverses over 100 meters on Moon's south pole

Days after the successful soft landing of Chandaryaan 3, Pragyan rover has traversed over 100 meters. Taking to X, ISRO shared the information and said the rover traversed over 100 meters and continuing. Earlier on August 31, rover was seen rotating in search of a safe route on the surface of the moon. ISRO shared the first observation from the ChaSTE payload onboard Vikram Lander. ChaSTE measured the temp profile of lunar topsoil around the pole, to understand the thermal behaviour of moon’s surface. Notably, ISRO also launched its maiden solar mission ‘Aditya-L1’ from Sriharikota on September 02. ‘Aditya-L1’ is India’s first space-based Indian observatory mission to study the Sun. Spacecraft is carrying 7 payloads to observe the photosphere, chromosphere, and outermost layers of Sun. The total travel time from the launch pad to L1 will take about four months for ‘Aditya-L1’.

Fresh images released by ISRO of the moon captured by a LPDC from an altitude of about 70 km, on August 19. ISRO is bidding to make a successful soft landing on the moon making India the only 4th country in the world to achieve the feat. If successful, India will be the first country in the world to land Moon’s unexplored South Pole. As per ISRO, Chandrayaan-3 is set to land on the moon on August 23 around 18:04 hrs.
