Jhelum boat accident: Boat capsizes in J&K's Jhelum River, 4 dead

In a tragic incident, a boat carrying school children capsized in the Jhelum river in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir on April 16. The Jhelum boat accident killed 4 people. The Srinagar Administration has launched a rescue operation in the area. A State Disaster Response Force team was also deployed. At least six persons including four children have died. Meanwhile, 4 bodies have been recovered, while others are missing. The boat which has capsized was ferrying children from Gandbal to Batwara in Srinagar. Continuous rains over last two days have led to an increase in the water levels of several water bodies, including Jhelum. Watch video

Rescue and search is operation underway in Ganderbal Nowgam area of ​​Srinagar. 3 people are still missing in the boat capsizing incident that occurred in the Jhelum River yesterday. According to DC Srinagar, Six bodies have been found so far. Officials said that the rescue operation continued till 11 pm last night but was halted due to darkness and heavy water flow in the river Jhelum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday assured that the Centre is committed to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir adding that assembly elections will also be held soon. "The time is not far when assembly elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir also. Jammu and Kashmir will get back its state status. You will be able to share your dreams with your MLAs, and your ministers," PM Modi said while addressing a public rally in Udhampur. The Prime Minister said that whatever he has done so far is only serves as a trailer of the work that he is yet to do in the region. In 2019, HM Amit Shah moved a resolution revoking Article 370 from J&K in Rajya Sabha on August 05. The resolution was passed and PM Modi-led Centre scrapped Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. It also brought an end to the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. Even after 5 years, the abrogation of Article 370 still haunts Pakistan, one of the biggest setbacks internationally. Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar called abrogation of Article 370 a “very painful, extreme step”. Notably, the strained ties between India and its neighbours has hit Pakistan’s trade severely. Reeling under economic crisis, Ishaq Dar called for “seriously examine” of trade with India. On the other side, Modi govt’s strategy of prioritising development has begun showing results in J&K. In the path of development, the state has witnessed the expenditure of the highest-ever funds in the financial year 2022-23.
