"Air mein truly hai khushi ki aroma," says Rosesh Sarabhai from the much-acclaimed Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai series, and fans couldn't agree more. After all, the classic comedy show, which first aired in 2004, is back after over a decade as a web series on video streaming site, Hotstar. Sarabhai, like the American sitcom, FRIENDS, is a series most '90s kids have grown up watching. Thankfully, season 2, with its new flavour, is satiating.
In the first episode, we are introduced to the old characters, and a few new ones. New parents Sahil and Monisha's seven-year-old son, Ornob, is a quirky mixture of grandmother Maya's high-handed snootiness and Monisha's middle-class peculiarities. Although, he prefers the tag 'charming grandson' over 'high-class pota'.
The show kicks off by portraying the distress of the beloved family, as a bus carrying them is seen hanging from a cliff. Sahil clarifies they all lived to tell the tale, while the other housemates point out that Monisha's decision to hire a cheap driver is responsible for their plight. Where were they off to, one asks. To the religious spot of a Matkadhar Baba to fulfil Monisha's wish of finding her brother-in-law, Rosesh, a beautiful bride.
Of course, the favourite bit of the show continues to be Maya and Monisha's banter. Or is it Rosesh's poetry? It is probably a heady mix of both. Maya's tirade against Monisha leaves you in splits. 'Every shade of middle class and worse,' as she rather emphatically puts it. Father-in-law Indravardhan's mockery of Rosesh is minimal in the first episode, but is in order over the season.
